Venus de Willendorf
The Venus of Willendorf is an 11.1 cm figurine of Venus, estimated to be about 25,000 to 30,000 years old, discovered in 1908 in the village of Willendorf in Lower Austria by a craftsman named Johann Veran.
It was carved from oroid limestone, which is not found in the area, and is stained red ochre. The original figurine is now in the collection of the Natural History Museum in Vienna.
According to the latest research, the limestone is of Italian or Ukrainian origin. These are the two geological possibilities.
